Landscape

In 2024, Harvard received over 54,000 applications, and with an acceptance rate of just 3%, what separates the accepted students from those who are rejected? This comprehensive guide explains exactly what you need to know to maximize your chances.

Harvard Admissions Requirements:

Standardized Tests:

Harvard will be requiring standardized test scores for the 2025 application cycle. Below are the 2024 year averages:

SAT Score

  • 2024 Average: 1440

ACT Score

  • 2024 Average: 34

What classes should I take to get into Harvard?

Harvard recommends the following high school curriculum at a minimum:

  • English: 4 years
  • Math: 4 years
  • Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and an advanced course in one of these subjects
  • History/Social Science: 3+ years
  • Foreign Language: 4 years

Students are encouraged to take rigorous coursework in core academic areas, including AP, IB, or honors-level classes.

What GPA do I need to get into Harvard?

The average GPA of admitted students in 2024 was 3.95 (unweighted). That said, Harvard looks beyond numbers. A slightly lower GPA can still be competitive with good test scores, a well-written personal statement, context, and a strong extracurricular section.

What extracurriculars should I do to get into Harvard?

Harvard values depth over breadth. Here’s what that means:

  • Show Your Story: Your activities should reflect your passions and form a cohesive narrative. Avoid listing 15 random clubs.
  • Quantify Your Impact: Admissions officers love numbers. Instead of “helped grow the club,” say “increased club membership by 40%.”
  • Demonstrate Growth: Highlight what you’ve learned or how you've changed from these experiences.

Whether you're leading an initiative, researching in a lab, or working part-time, it’s never too late to build meaningful involvement.

Harvard Application Requirements

Do I need to submit letters of recommendation?

Yes. Harvard requires two teacher recommendations. After your application has been submitted, you can also submit additional recommenders, such as an employer, coach, or mentor.

Is there an interview?

Yes, but not everyone is guaranteed an interview. Alumni conduct Harvard interviews, so whether you get an interview can depend on your location and whether there’s a willing alum in your area. If offered, you’ll have a conversational interview with a Harvard alum. The purpose isn’t to evaluate your academic record, but to get to know you better from your interests, goals, and personality beyond the application.

Harvard Supplemental Essays

In addition to your Common App personal statement, Harvard requires five 150-word supplemental essays. These are critical ways to highlight what makes you unique and why you belong at Harvard.

Here are the prompts:

  1. Harvard has long recognized the importance of enrolling a diverse student body. How will the life experiences shaping who you are today enable you to contribute to Harvard?
  2. Describe a time when you strongly disagreed with someone about an idea or issue. How did you communicate or engage with this person? What did you learn from this experience?
  3. Briefly describe any of your extracurricular activities, employment experience, travel, or family responsibilities that have shaped who you are.
  4. How do you hope to use your Harvard education in the future?
  5. Top 3 things your roommates might like to know about you.

Essay tips:

  • Identify Key Themes: Consider what parts of your story haven’t yet been highlighted in other parts of your application. This could include passions, experiences, or perspectives demonstrating growth, leadership, or curiosity.
  • Why Harvard: Explain why you and Harvard are a perfect fit for each other. Other than prestige or location, what does Harvard offer that no other school does, and why is that an ideal match with who you are? Look into specific academic departments, extracurricular activities, research centers, or initiatives at Harvard that resonate with your demonstrated interests.
